Paths opening from dead ends

This year, I am participating in the group exhibition “Paths Opening from dead ends” at EM with seven pieces from my “Alveolus” series, which I began during my residency in Leipzig, Germany.

These works are part of the journey I started in 2023, exploring the theme of “breathing.” In particular, this exhibition focuses on the concept of “exhalation.” Exhaling, for me, goes beyond a simple physiological process; it is a symbolic act of expanding my inner world outward.

My work examines breathing from four different perspectives: inhalation, exhalation, multiple frames, and a single frame.

In my earlier pieces, I explored multiple frames within a single canvas, reflecting the diverse environments surrounding me or the different identities within myself. While these frames seem disconnected due to their boundaries, they also support one another, forming a sense of connection.

In this exhibition, I shift my focus to a single frame. To me, one frame contains the entirety of life—an encapsulated universe. Within it, the entire process of breathing—its beginning and end, its inhalation and exhalation—is represented.

The frame, free from boundaries, and the soft spreading of paint outward from the center resemble the structure of alveoli, the smallest unit in our respiratory system. Through this form, I wanted to capture the delicate process in which oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the moment we take a breath. Similarly, in my life, this process symbolizes letting go of what is old and unfolding what has been condensed, embodying a wish to live without limits or rigid structures, to expand gently and infinitely. ©hwaran

올해 첫 전시인 EM의 단체전 <막힌 곳에서 열리는 길>소식 알립니다. 저는 지난 독일 라이프치히 아트레지던시에서 작업한 ‘Alveolus, 폐포’ 시리즈 7점으로 참여합니다.

이번 전시작품은 2023년부터 시작된 ‘호흡’의 여정 중, 특히 “날숨”에 집중한 작품들입니다. 내쉬는 숨이라는 단순한 생리적과정을 넘어, 내면을 외부로 확장시키는 상징적인 과정이 담겨있습니다.

저의 작업은 ‘들숨’, ‘날숨’ 그리고 ‘여러개의 틀’, ‘하나의 틀’ 총 네가지의 다른 관점으로 바라본 호흡에 대해 이야기합니다.

초기 작품에서는 한 화면에 여러개의 틀, 즉 나를 둘러싼 다양한 환경들 혹은 내 안의 서로 다른 정체성을 나타냅니다. 각 틀의 경계선으로 인해 단절된 것 같지만 동시에 서로의 선을 지탱해주며 유대감을 형성하는 모습도 보여줍니다.

이번 전시 작품들은 모두 ’하나의 틀’에 집중된 시선에 대한 작품들입니다. 한개의 틀은 삶의 전체를 담고 있는 압축된 우주와도 같습니다. 그 속에서 호흡의 시작과 끝, 들숨과 날숨의 모든 과정이 보여집니다.

경계가 없어진 틀, 그리고 중심에서 여러방향으로 부드럽게 뻗어나가는 물감의 번짐을 통해 마치 우리의 호흡 기관 중 가장 작은 단위인 폐포와 유사한 형태를 갖으면서도, 이 폐포에서 숨을 들이쉰 찰나에 산소와 이산화탄소의 교환이 이뤄지는 그 섬세한 과정을 표현하고 싶었습니다. 우리의 삶 속에서도 묵은 것들을 놓아주는 것, 응축시켜놨던 나를 펼쳐내는 것처럼 어떠한 삶의 제한과 틀 없이 무한히 퍼져나가는 소망을 담아봅니다.

‘Alveolus, 폐포’ 시리즈를 통해 우리가 매일 무심코 반복하는 호흡의 과정을 들여다보며, 당연하게 여기던 숨이라는 과정이 얼마나 섬세하고 소중한지 다시금 느낄 수 있기를 바랍니다. ‘Breath, 숨’이라는 가장 기초적인 생명 활동 속에서 삶의 무한한 가능성과 아름다움을 발견하는 계기가 되었으면 합니다. ©화란

Paths Opening from Dead Ends

We are often faced with overwhelming obstacles. These adversities may be from personal limitations, relationships, physical restrictions or social structures. EM Gallery starts the new year 2025 with our first exhibition, ‘Paths Opening from Dead Ends’. We hope to share the various challenges we face on our path in life with seven artists.

The artworks are traces of each artist’s fierce thoughts and emotions as they stand in front of the obstacles. They are at the same time resolutions of their attempts and search for possibilities in the unknown. Limitations are often the catalysts for creativity. This is paradoxical but true. When choices are limited, we are able to escape from the prejudices and begin thinking out of the box. The moment challenges transform into artistic motivation reflect the choices of form and materiality in production and often becomes the message the artist offers. This aligns with the experimentation and forward thinking characteristics of contemporary art searching for ingenious forms of beauty that crosses beyond its borders. Park Yeonjun, a Korean poet, mentions the Japanese Kintsugi process where flaws are filled with gold, transcending into a new form of beauty. She expresses the way we embrace our wounds and vulnerabilities as part of life and move forward as ‘moving forward cherishing our flaws. The exhibition draws upon this process seeking new potential in and on the hardened gaps and broken paths.

The New Year starts with not much disparity from the day before. Yet it is a time we all imagine a different self. We hope to look back at moments of despair and broaden our views blocked by obstacles. We hope the works that embrace the struggles of the contemporary artists touch the viewer’s heart and fill the cracks with gold with encouragement to open up new paths. ©Shim JIhyeon, EM

막힌 곳에서 열리는 길

시시때때로 무지막지한 벽이 앞을 막아선다. 개인의 고민과 한계에서 비롯되기도 하고 물리적인 제약, 혹은 사회적 구조 속에서 형성된 보이지 않는 거대한 장벽일 때도 있다. 이는 우리를 주저하게 하고, 나아가 공동체의 균형을 흔들고 일상을 마비시키기도 한다. 하지만 모든 막힘이 끝을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 예상하지 못한 새 흐름을 만들어내는 전환점이 되기도 한다. EM 갤러리는 2025년 첫 전시로 ‘막힌 곳에서 열리는 길’을 개최 한다. 참여하는 7인의 작가와 함께 각자의 멈춘 길과 도전의 순간들을 나누고자 한다.

예술은 벽 앞에 선 인간의 치열한 고뇌와 열망의 흔적이자, 저 너머의 세계를 찾으려는 시도와 탐색의 결과물이다. 제약이 오히려 창의성의 촉매제가 된다는 사실은 역설적이지만 분명한 사실이다. 선택지가 제한될 때 익숙한 고정관념에서 벗어날 수 있고 나아가 창조의 시작점이 된다. 이 과정에서 어려움은 예술적 변화를 불러일으키며, 작품 속에서 형식으로, 때로는 메시지로 드러난다. 예술의 실험적이고 진취적 성격과 맥을 같이 하며 경계를 넘어 독창적인 형태의 아름다움과 새로운 언어를 찾는다. 박연준 시인은 저서에서 일본의 킨츠기를 언급하며 흠을 옻과 금가루로 메워 아름답게 승화시키는 과정을 이야기했다. 상처와 결핍을 삶의 일부로 끌어안고 나아가는 태도를 ‘금을 간직한 채 나아가는 일‘이라 했다. 이번 전시 또한 굳어진 틀과 부서진 경로 속에서 발견한 또 다른 선택지를 새롭게 그려내고자 한다.

새해는 어제와 크게 다르지 않은 모습으로 시작되지만, 누구나 더 나은 자신을 꿈꿔보게 되는 시기다. 막다른 길로 보였던 지난 시간들을 돌아보고, 가려졌던 시야를 확장해 보는 계기가 되기를. 동시대 작가들의 고군분투가 담긴 작업을 통해, 금으로 메운 균열이 관객의 마음을 건드리길 바란다. 다른 경로를 열어갈 용기를 전할 수 있기를 기대한다. ©심지현,EM
